Revolutionists

The Extremists Who Hijacked the 1970s

Enabled by mass media and air travel, an unprecedented wave of transnational terrorism spread around the world from the late 1960s. Jason Burke, an international security correspondent of The Guardian, tells the story of this new kind of violence, which shaped the world we live in today. The author explains how the secular, often left-leaning revolutionaries in Europe and the Middle East hijacked the 1970s and contributed to the subsequent rise of violence associated with a very different set of revolutionary ideas: Islamic extremism.
