The Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk

Representation of War and Political Controversies

The Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk, the biggest historical museum in Poland, opened to the public in 2017. It was an attempt to include the Polish and, more generally, East European experience of the war into dominant overall narratives of this conflict, which were usually shaped in the West. The museum provoked extremely heated political controversies which reflect deep ideological splits not only regarding the understanding of the past, but also more generally regarding the public roles of history, culture and museums.

Online-Lecture by Pawel Machcewicz (Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw / founding director of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk).

The Research Colloquium ‘The Holocaust and its Contexts’ is co-hosted by the Department of Modern and Contemporary History at LMU Munich and the Center for Holocaust Studies at the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History (IfZ). The Colloquium is held in cooperation with the Oberseminar ‘New Research in Contemporary History’.
